Who We Serve

At The World is Mine Foundation Inc., we are dedicated to supporting a wide spectrum of extraordinary young people, recognizing that the legal and functional definitions of a "child with a disability" are as diverse as the individuals themselves. We proudly serve students aged 3 to 21 who qualify for special education under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Our reach also extends to those protected under the broader civil rights umbrellas of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504. We believe in advocacy for every child whose physical or mental impairments substantially limit major life activities—encompassing conditions that range from traumatic brain injuries to chronic health issues like severe allergies or asthma. By embracing these comprehensive federal standards, we ensure that our foundation remains a steadfast resource for every child striving for equity, education, and a world without limits.

The 13 Disability Categories Under IDEA:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): A developmental disability affecting verbal/nonverbal communication and social interaction, typically evident before age 3.
Deaf-Blindness: Concomitant hearing and visual impairments, causing severe communication and educational needs.
Deafness: A hearing impairment so severe that the child is impaired in processing linguistic information through hearing, with or without amplification.
Emotional Disturbance: Conditions exhibiting one or more specific emotional or behavioral characteristics over a long period that affect educational performance, including schizophrenia or anxiety.
Hearing Impairment: A hearing loss, whether permanent or fluctuating, that is not included under the definition of deafness.
Intellectual Disability: Significantly sub-average general intellectual functioning existing concurrently with deficits in adaptive behavior.
Multiple Disabilities: Concomitant impairments (such as intellectual disability-blindness), the combination of which causes severe educational needs.
Orthopedic Impairment: A severe impairment involving the functions of the skeletal system—bones, joints, and muscles.
Other Health Impairment (OHI): Conditions limiting strength, vitality, or alertness (e.g., asthma, ADHD, epilepsy, diabetes).
Specific Learning Disability (SLD): A disorder in one or more basic psychological processes involved in understanding or using language, affecting reading, writing, listening, or math.
Speech or Language Impairment: A communication disorder such as stuttering, impaired articulation, or language impairment.
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): An acquired injury to the brain caused by external physical force, resulting in total or partial functional disability.
Visual Impairment, including Blindness: An impairment in vision that, even with correction, adversely affects educational performance.

Speech and language therapy for children is a assessment and treatment process provided by Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) to address delays or disorders in communication, including speech sounds, understanding language, using language, social communication, and feeding/swallowing issues.

Occupational Therapy (OT)

Pediatric Occupational Therapy (OT) helps children develop essential physical, cognitive, and motor skills needed for daily life—"occupations" like playing, learning, and self-care.

Physical Therapy (PT)

Physical Therapy (PT) for special needs children is a specialized, play-based approach designed to improve gross motor skills, strength, balance, and coordination. It helps children with conditions like cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, or developmental delays achieve mobility, independence, and better functionality in daily activities

Testing & Evaluations

Testing and evaluation is a comprehensive process used to identify if a child has a disability and to determine the specific educational services and supports they need to succeed.

Testing Include:

Cognitive/Intellectual (IQ) Testing: Measures thinking, reasoning, and memory. Examples include the WISC-V and Stanford-Binet.
Academic Achievement Testing: Evaluates mastery of school subjects like reading, math, and writing (e.g., Woodcock-Johnson or KTEA).
Speech and Language Evaluations: Assesses the ability to understand and express language.
Occupational and Physical Therapy (OT/PT): Measures fine motor skills (handwriting) and gross motor skills (movement/coordination).
Behavioral and Social-Emotional Assessments: Identifies challenges like ADHD, anxiety, or difficulties with social interactions.
Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA): Specifically designed to understand the "why" behind challenging behaviors to create a support plan.

Behavioral and Mental Health Services

Behavioral and mental health services such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), therapy, and medication management—designed to address emotional, developmental, and behavioral challenges. These services aim to improve daily functioning at home and school, enhance communication skills, reduce maladaptive behaviors, and support families.

Family Advocacy & Benefits Counseling

Family Advocacy & Benefits Counseling is designed to help parents and caregivers navigate the complex systems of education, healthcare, and government assistance. These services empower families to secure necessary resources, such as Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and therapeutic interventions, to improve the quality of life for children with disabilities.

Services Include:

Key Components of Family Advocacy & Benefits Counseling

Special Education Advocacy: Advocates assist in developing IEPs or 504 plans, ensuring schools follow Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) regulations, and providing support during school meetings.
Benefits Counseling (SSI & Medicaid): Counselors help families navigate the application process for government benefits, including addressing "deeming" rules, where parental income may limit a child’s SSI eligibility.
Resource & Referral Services: Advocates assess the child's needs and provide direct referrals to medical specialists, therapists, and community resources.
Legal & Systemic Support: In cases involving abuse or neglect, advocates help navigate the Department of Children and Families (DCF) process, court proceedings, and safety planning.
Emotional & Educational Support: Advocates provide one-on-one guidance to help caregivers process, understand, and manage challenges associated with a child’s diagnosis.

Respite Care & Parent Support

Respite Care & Parent Support

Respite care provides temporary relief for parents allowing them to take a break from intensive caregiving to prevent burnout, run errands, or rest. These services can be in-home or out-of-home (day centers/camps) and range from a few hours to several days. Group Counsiling and Personalized Family Plans.

Inclusive Preschool / After‑school Programs

Inclusive preschool and after-school programs will integrate children with disabilities into general education settings, providing specialized instruction alongside peers. These programs, will utilize IEPs (Individualized Education Programs), promote social-emotional growth, peer modeling, and full community participation in supportive, adapted environments.

Inclusive Preschool / After‑school Programs

Transition & Life Skills supports individualized education programs (often part of an IEP) designed to build independence in daily living, social interaction, and vocational tasks. They bridge the gap from school to adulthood, focusing on skills like cooking, budgeting, transportation, and vocational training.

Key Components of Transition & Life Skills:

Independent Living: Teaching daily chores, personal hygiene, cooking, laundry, and managing money.
Vocational Skills: Preparing for employment through job coaching, resume building, and work-related behavioral training.
Social & Communication Skills: Developing interpersonal skills, navigating social situations, and using self-advocacy to request support.
Community Participation: Navigating public transportation, shopping, and utilizing community resources.
Self-Regulation: Learning coping mechanisms and managing stress during transitions between activities.

Community Inclusion & Recreation

Community inclusion and recreation for special needs children involves integrating children with disabilities into everyday community activities, offering tailored programs that foster social relationships, confidence, and skill development in environments that are accessible to all. It ensures children with special needs can live, play, and learn alongside peers without disabilities, rather than being segregated.
